Meet the Artist: Vlad K

Artist: Vlad K - Charlotte, North Carolina

Vlad wanted a career where he could create something that actually felt like his own.

Tattooing gave him that freedom—a way to combine art, personal expression, and real connection with the people wearing his work.

After learning the basics nearly 16 years ago, much of the journey that followed came through practice, experimentation, mistakes, and figuring things out for himself.

That independence eventually helped Vlad develop a colorful anime style people began recognizing far beyond his own city.

We caught up with Vlad so you can get to know a little more about the artist behind the work.

Why did you choose tattooing?

I wanted a career where I could create, express my own ideas, and build something personal.

Tattooing gave me all of that.

At some point, I realized keeping it as a backup plan would stop me from ever giving it everything I had.

Eventually, the fear of never really trying became bigger than the fear of failing, so I committed to it completely.

How did you learn?

Someone showed me the basics about 16 years ago.

After that, I had to learn most of it myself through practice, mistakes, experimenting, and continuing to push forward.

I think having to figure so much out on my own shaped the way I approach tattooing today.

I'm still always looking for the next thing I can improve.

What are your favorite anime?

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, K-On!, and Neon Genesis Evangelion are some of my favorites.

For me, one of the biggest things anime does well is character design.

The clothing, expressions, colors, silhouettes, and little details all help give a character their identity, and that's a huge part of what keeps me interested in anime tattooing.

Where did your style come from?

My anime style wasn't really shaped by the community around me.

If anything, I developed it in spite of what was around me.

That forced me to figure out what I personally liked, what I wanted my tattoos to look like, and what direction actually felt natural to me.

Over time, that became something people started recognizing as my work.

What kind of work do you love?

I really enjoy color and character portraits.

Characters give you so much to work with visually, especially when the original design already has strong colors, expressions, or personality.

I like finding a way to preserve what makes the character recognizable while still making the tattoo feel like my work.

When did things feel real?

Probably when people started traveling specifically to get an anime tattoo from me.

First it was people coming from other cities.

Then I started having clients travel from other countries.

That was when I realized the work had become recognizable enough that someone was willing to travel a serious distance just because they wanted something from me.

That's a pretty incredible feeling.

Do you hide Easter eggs?

Sometimes.

I'll hide my cat logo inside a design or add little real-world details that make the character feel different.

That could be a recognizable brand, a piece of clothing, or even a rock band T-shirt.

They're small things, but they can add another layer of personality to the tattoo.

What makes a tattoo successful?

Seeing someone genuinely excited about it.

There wasn't one specific client interaction that made everything click for me.

It was seeing people love the work, come back for another tattoo, and continue trusting me with new ideas.

When someone wants another piece from you, that's a pretty good sign you're doing something right.

What piece makes you proud?

My best tattoo is always the next one.

I don't really want to look at something I've already done and decide that's as good as I'm going to get.

I'm constantly trying to improve.

So hopefully, the tattoo I'm most proud of is still ahead of me.

Where are you now?

Somewhere in the middle.

I've been doing this for a long time and I've reached a point where people recognize my work, but I don't really look at tattooing like there's a finish line.

There's always something else to learn or something I could execute better.

I just want to keep moving forward.
