Meet the Artist: H
Artist: H - Fairfax, Virginia
Tattooing has been part of H’s life for so long that imagining a completely different career doesn’t really come naturally.
Growing up, weekends meant Toonami, anime, video games, and plenty of time spent drawing the characters he liked. Metal music eventually worked its way into that mix too, adding a darker, grungier edge to the way he approaches art.
Today, H works across different styles but has a particular love for black and grey, bringing that same mix of anime, gaming, and personal influence into the tattoos he creates.
We caught up with H so you can get to know a little more about the artist behind the work.
Where did your style begin?
Anime was probably my favorite kind of pop culture growing up.
Toonami was one of the things I looked forward to most on the weekends, and I spent a lot of time drawing anime and video game characters.
Metal music was another big influence for me and brought a little more of a grungy feeling into my artwork.
All of that eventually found its way into how I approach tattooing now.
How did you get started?
Tattooing was pretty much all I knew.
Once I decided to pursue it, I put my time, money, and energy into figuring it out.
My family and friends ended up becoming some of the first people I practiced on after tattooing myself, so they definitely played a part in helping me get started.
Once someone actually wanted a piece from me, that was already enough to make me feel like I was onto something.
What matters most to you?
Connection and trust are everything.
I don’t want to permanently mark someone with something that either of us is going to regret later.
Every piece should matter to some degree.
Whether the meaning is serious or it’s simply a character someone genuinely loves, I want there to be a reason they’re excited to wear it.
Do you add Easter eggs?
All the time.
I’m a fan too, so if there’s an opportunity to sneak in a clue, reference, or small detail connected to a character, show, or movie, I’m probably going to think about it.
Those little things can make the tattoo more fun for someone who really knows the source material.
What tattoo stayed with you?
One of the pieces I’m proudest of was actually fairly small.
A client came to me for a Darling in the Franxx tattoo to commemorate his wife, who had recently passed away.
He gave me a lot of freedom with the design, but the conversation we had during the session ended up shaping the tattoo even more.
As I learned more about them, I started adjusting and freestyling parts of the characters so they reflected a little more of both of their personalities.
When he saw the finished piece, he broke down crying.
The tattoo itself came out great, but honestly, the conversation and what the piece meant to him are what made that one stick with me.
What keeps you improving?
I’m always looking at what I could do better.
Even when other people like the work, I’m usually thinking about the next thing I want to improve.
That can come with some imposter syndrome, but I think it also keeps me from getting too comfortable.
There’s always another level I want to reach.
What can clients expect?
I’m pretty easygoing.
I work across a lot of different styles, like having fun with the tattoos I make, and I’m not bad to be around for a few hours either.
But underneath all of that, I take the trust behind a tattoo seriously.
I want you to leave with something we both feel good about.
