Hunter x Hunter is not just another shonen you casually watch in the background. It is the kind of series that pulls you in when you least expect it. One minute it is lighthearted adventure energy, the next it is hitting you with emotional damage you were not prepared for.
What really makes it stand out is how real the characters feel. Gon and Killua’s friendship hits because it actually grows through pain and survival. Kurapika’s revenge story keeps getting heavier the deeper you go. The Phantom Troupe are technically villains, but their history makes them impossible to fully hate. And then you have characters like Hisoka and Pitou who show up and instantly change the temperature of every scene they are in.
That is why Hunter x Hunter tattoos work so well. It is not just about how the characters look, it is about what they represent. Every design carries a story that fans connect to on a deeper level.
Kurapika

Artist: Autumn Jolly - Denver, Colorado
Kurapika is one of the most tragic characters in Hunter x Hunter because everything about him is tied to loss. As the last survivor of the Kurta Clan, his entire life becomes centered around revenge and recovering the Scarlet Eyes that were stolen from his people. That grief never really leaves him. He is calm, intelligent, and controlled on the surface, but underneath all of that is someone constantly carrying anger and heartbreak.
What makes Kurapika even more interesting is how much influence he has had on anime as a whole. A lot of fans point out that he basically became a blueprint for characters like Sasuke in Naruto, especially when it comes to the “last survivor of a wiped-out clan driven by revenge” archetype. Kurapika helped define that kind of storytelling long before it became common.
And now in the current manga arc, his role has only grown. With the Black Whale heading toward the Dark Continent, Kurapika is right in the middle of the Succession War, dealing with politics, bodyguards, Nen abilities, and threats that go way beyond simple revenge. He is no longer just a side character in a personal vendetta. He is a key player in one of the most complex arcs in the series.
Neferpitou

Artist: Paola Dominguez - Ontario, California
Pitou’s introduction is one of the biggest tone shifts in Hunter x Hunter. Before the Chimera Ant arc really shows how bad things can get, Pitou pulls up and immediately changes the energy of the whole series. Their fight with Kite is the moment where you realize the Royal Guards are not just strong. They are on a completely different level.
That fight becomes one of the most important moments for Gon and Killua too. Kite’s death breaks something in Gon, and Pitou becomes the target for all of that grief, guilt, and rage. From that point on, Gon is not just trying to win a fight. He is chasing an emotional breaking point that keeps getting worse.
The final confrontation between Gon and Pitou is one of the darkest moments in the series. Pitou is trying to protect Komugi, Gon is already past the point of reason, and the fight ends with Gon making a Nen contract that gives him the power to destroy Pitou at the cost of almost everything. This tattoo captures Pitou’s unsettling energy really well. The red eyes, sharp expression, and black and grey shading make the piece feel creepy without needing to overdo it.
Gon and Killua

Artist: William Spinner - Los Angeles, California
Gon and Killua have one of the best friendships in anime because it feels like they genuinely changed each other’s lives. Gon gives Killua a reason to leave the world he was raised in, and Killua becomes the person who stays beside Gon through almost everything. Their bond is not just cute best friend stuff. They constantly risk their lives for each other.
One of the best early examples is Gon going all the way to the Zoldyck estate to bring Killua back. Killua was raised in a family of assassins, surrounded by control, pressure, and manipulation, but Gon still shows up like, “Nah, I’m taking my friend with me.” That says everything about their dynamic.
Then later, Killua does everything he can to save Gon after the Pitou fight. Gon gives up almost everything through that Nen contract, and Killua refuses to let that be the end of him. He brings Alluka and Nanika into the story because saving Gon matters that much to him. This tattoo shows both of them together perfectly, with Gon in front and Killua behind him, almost like a reminder of how much their stories are tied together. Best friends for real.
Chrollo; Phantom Troupe

Artist: Mish Malik - Arlington Heights, Illinois
Chrollo is one of the best villains in Hunter x Hunter because he does not feel simple. He is calm, intelligent, dangerous, and almost impossible to read. As the leader of the Phantom Troupe, he carries himself like someone who is always a few steps ahead, but the Troupe itself is what makes him even more interesting.
The spiders are not just a random villain group. They come from Meteor City, and their bond goes way deeper than people realize at first. Chrollo created the Phantom Troupe after the death of Sarasa, and that tragedy shaped what the group became. They are thieves, killers, and villains, but they also have a real history and loyalty to each other that makes them one of the most memorable groups in anime.
That is why this spider tattoo works so well as a homage piece. You do not even need a full character portrait for Hunter x Hunter fans to know what it means. The spider and the number instantly point to the Phantom Troupe. It is clean, bold, and perfect for someone who wants to represent their favorite villain group without overcomplicating the design.
Hisoka

Artist: Davide Set- Phoenix, Arizona
Hisoka is one of the most entertaining characters in Hunter x Hunter because you never really know what he is going to do, but you always know it is going to be a problem. He is not a traditional villain who wants to take over the world. His whole thing is chasing strong opponents, testing people, and putting himself wherever the most interesting fight is going to happen.
That is what makes his dynamic with Gon so weird and memorable. Hisoka sees Gon’s potential early and basically treats him like someone he wants to fight later once he is stronger. Then with the Phantom Troupe, things get even more interesting because Hisoka’s real goal is Chrollo. He joins the spiders, plays his own game, and spends so much of the story trying to get the fight he wants.
And of course, you cannot talk about Hisoka without saying that Bungee Gum has the properties of both rubber and gum. It is basically required at this point.
This tattoo captures Hisoka beautifully. The pink hair, sly expression, glowing aura, and bright color palette all make the piece feel flashy in the exact way Hisoka should. And with Hisoka and Chrollo now both tied up in the chaos heading toward the Dark Continent, it makes the tattoo even more exciting. That rematch is one of the biggest things Hunter x Hunter fans are waiting on.
